UK’s top electric bike retailer appoints Sugar PR

50cycles, the UK’s fastest growing electric bike retailer, is working with Sugar PR in Manchester to handle public relations and content marketing.

Turnover last year was £3.5m and is expected to top £5m by the end of next year. The company is targeting five other major UK cities for new stores. It is earmarking a £10m turnover within the next eighteen months.

50cycles offers all the major premium brands in the market including: Kalkhoff, Cube, Giant, Scott and Raleigh. In addition, the company also sells its own range of branded cycles – Beat Bikes.

Bikes retail between £1,000 up to £16,000.  As well as selling the bikes, the shops also have fully equipped service workshops.

Electric bikes go ‘further and faster’

The electric bike market is expected to grow at least 20 per cent during 2017. Electric bikes are popular with people who want to ride further and faster. Sales are booming because of demand from commuters, couriers, recreational cyclists and people who want an alternative to traditional push bikes.

Scott Snaith, managing director of 50cycles, says:

“Electric bikes mean you can enjoy cycling whatever your age, ability or the local terrain. Electric bikes have the power to make cycling make sense for everybody.

“We appointed Sugar PR because of the enthusiasm of the team for our business and the fact that the agency is strategically located in Manchester which is perfect as we continue opening new stores in the North of England and Scotland in particular. We’re also happy to support a young, startup PR agency because we remember what it was like in the early days of our business.

We’re looking forward to working with Pete and the team to support us getting our key messages out there in the marketplace.”

Pete Davies of Sugar PR, adds:

“We’re delighted to have been appointed by one of the UK’s most innovative retailers. It’s always a pleasure to be working with clients who are disrupting their marketplaces. We’re going to be assisting 50cycles on their growth journey and making sure that everyone in the UK is in no doubt who the specialist electric bike retailer is.

“It’s a magnificent business and one that we’re culturally similar. As soon as I met Scott I wanted to work with him. He’s got a clear vision for the business and I love the story of how the two brothers started. We’ll be handling a mix of media relations, content marketing and reputation management for the team.”

Electric bikes are revolutionising the cycling industry. 78 per cent of all bikes sold in the Netherlands, a country famous for its cycling culture, were electric. Major manufacturer of e-bikes Kalkhoff has sold more than 600,000 units and expects to sell more than a million by the end of the year.

50Cycles was founded in 2004 by brothers Scott and Tim Snaith. The duo bought two electric bikes in Japan in order to ride one and sell the other. They set up a single page website and sold it within two days.

Since then, the business has sold more than 25,000 electric bikes and is now the UK’s fastest growing retailer of electric bikes and has sold more than anyone else.

The company is on track to reach a £10m turnover within the next two years. The company takes its name from 50 hertz, the electric utility frequency.
